The Decade-Long Corporate Detour of a Self-Taught Dreamer

Sreekanth’s entry into cinema is far removed from traditional film school pathways. Over a decade ago, he took his first steps in the industry as an assistant on the experimental, Nandi Award-winning film Minugurulu—a project whose script achieved the rare honor of being archived in the prestigious Oscar Library. However, practical life caught up, forcing him into a ten-year corporate stint.

"I spent over ten hours a day sitting at an office desk, completely checked out because I was terrible at software, mathematics, and Excel. My mind was permanently occupied with cinema," Sreekanth confessed. "I learned the grammar of filmmaking simply by obsessively watching movies and studying director interviews. Whenever I saw poor writing getting mainstream opportunities, it fueled my frustration. I put my family through immense hardships, even quitting my job at points to carry raw stories around for OTT platforms."

A Scribbled Matchbox Seed and a Twenty-Year Coffee Audition

The structural seed for Deewana sprouted from a surprisingly ordinary moment—watching a television anchor on Gemini TV. It prompted a chain of curiosity: What happens if a complete stranger approaches her? What situations would unfold?

  • The Ten-Draft Grind: Terrified of losing his ideas, Sreekanth would immediately scribble plot points on anything available, including matchbox covers. The very first draft of Deewana was written nearly twelve years ago. Over the years, he methodically refined the script through ten comprehensive drafts, self-correcting the character arcs based on raw market feedback from smaller producers.

  • The Classical Underpinnings: While the premise shares a thematic, bittersweet heartbeat with the classical works of Rabindranath Tagore, Anton Chekhov, and Doordarshan’s iconic Katha Sagar, Sreekanth engineered his version into a large-scale commercial package driven by pure, unadulterated emotion. The narrative tracks an extroverted, one-sided lover aggressively pursuing his love in the first half, before pivoting into a completely different, deeply moving emotional route in the second half.

  • The Ultimate Studio Pitch: Reflecting on how he finally broke through, the director shared a cinematic moment at Ramanaidu Studios where he gathered the courage to directly approach Allu Aravind and Satyanand. "I was brutally told that if my story failed to impress, even the coffee served at the office would be a waste of resources. I had been restricted from even entering those gates for years, but after a twenty-year chase, I finally sat down and shared that coffee with Aravind sir. Thankfully, the story blew his team away, and that coffee didn't go to waste."

Zero Reshoots and Unleashing Harshith Reddy’s Mass Potential

Transitioning the script to the floors required immense logistical discipline. While the initial schedule demanded 69 shooting days, tight resource frameworks forced the team to crunch principal photography down into an intensive, hyper-focused schedule. Backed by extensive character workshops, the team wrapped the project effectively with zero post-production reshoots, filming entirely across real, un-staged locations in Hyderabad.

An All-Section Universal Appeal: Sreekanth highly praised his leading man, Harshith Reddy, noting that while the market initially knew him for softer roles, Deewana uncoils his explosive screen presence. "It carries the nostalgic, pure fragrance of a 1990s romance, but executed with modern technical grit. Anyone who has ever been a 'deewana' (obsessive lover) for a person, a dream, or a passion will find their soul mirrored in this film," the director stated.

The director paid rich tribute to his music composer and childhood friend, Eswar, who self-taught himself music and stood by him to compose a viral, chartbuster soundtrack album that won the unconditional approval of Geetha Arts. Looking toward the horizon, Sreekanth revealed that he already commands a portfolio of highly ambitious, technically demanding, and futuristic scripts. Armed with a fierce desire for genuine audience feedback over manufactured praise, the debutant filmmaker is perfectly positioned to capture hearts across all demographics when Deewana storms global theatres this Friday.
