The admission of Indians students in various American universities has increased by about 19 per cent compared to last year. According to a US government report, more than 21 percent of over one million strong foreign students in the USA are Indian students.
During 2021-22, 1,99,182 Indian students pursued higher education in the US, when compared to 1,67,582 students in 2020-21. The data was released in the Open Doors Report, an annual survey conducted on international students. The phenomenal increase in the number of Indian students shifting to the US is expected to overtake China by 2022-23, with about 82,000 visas issued already between June and August. This is reportedly the highest number among all countries.
According to Don Heflin, the Minister Counsellor for Consular Affairs of the US embassy in New Delhi, the reasons for China falling behind India is attributed to strict quarantine norms and travel restrictions as a result of Covid which made it challenging for the Chinese students to acquire US visas. Overall, though Covid was a challenge, Indian students eventually had overcome this challenge and made it successfully and in the long term, this could be an advantage for our students in America while the Chinese may have to relegate to the second spot.
