Following a tragic incident claiming a life and leaving another critically injured, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has identified 597 trees citywide as posing significant risks due to age, dryness, and decay.
The urgency for action surged after a decayed tree fatally fell on Devender, a Tumkunta resident, as he and his wife Sunita headed to Cantonment Hospital in Bolarum on Tuesday morning. Devender succumbed to the impact, while Sunita sustained severe injuries. Locals had repeatedly raised concerns about the tree's precarious condition, exacerbated by recent heavy rains.
GHMC teams conducted extensive inspections across various zones, identifying Secunderabad with 204 hazardous trees, LB Nagar with 119, and Kukatpally with 106. Out of these, 530 trees are slated for immediate felling, 57 for translocation, and 10 for pruning.
