The government today introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha in an attempt to effectively address some long-standing issues (like vested interests wielding extensive clout) related to the powers of the State Waqf Boards, registration and survey of waqf properties and removal of encroachments.
As per early national media reports, the YSRCP is opposing the Bill. If true, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is joining forces with Congress party, Samajwadi Party, and the TMC on this particular issue.
If the YSRCP vocally opposes the Bill both inside and outside the Parliament, it will be clear that Jagan is interested to cosy up to the INDIA bloc even further. He is on good terms with Akhilesh Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
It will be interesting to see how the TDP will react to the issue. The Congress party, led by YS Sharmila in AP, will surely campaign against Chandrababu Naidu if he supports the Bill.
