The Congress government in Karnataka is building a new city. Named the KHIR City, it will promote job creation. The acronym stands for Knowledge, Healthcare, Innovation, and Research. "The city is coming up within 60 km from Bengaluru. The aim is to attract Rs 40,000 Cr as investment. The project will help create 80,000 jobs," a Minister said.
The city is expected to contribute over Rs 1 lakh crore to the state GDP. "The formation of Electronic City in 1970 and ITPL in 2000s has helped in attracting various tech companies and establishing Karnataka as a IT / ITes capital of India. KHIR City will help to achieve more," the government said.
The sprawling city will be spread over 1,000-2,000 acres of land approximately. "This innovation driven city will help Karnataka transition to an IP-based product economy driven by world-class research, education and innovation," the Siddaramaiah government said in a statement.
Experts believe that the creation of 80,000 jobs seems to be a realistic estimate. They also say that Bengaluru needs to be relieved of its burden. "Lakhs of people migrate to the city every year. This is not sustainable. A new city needs to be developed to boost wealth creation," a commentator opined.
