Josyula Gayathri Devi, the costume designer behind the recently released ZEE5 period detective series 'Vikkatakavi', sheds light on the unique challenges and rewards of recreating a bygone era for the screen.
Devi's journey to costume design is a fascinating one. After a successful career in software engineering with giants like Samsung and Microsoft, she followed her passion for fashion, eventually leading her to the world of film and television.
"Working on OTT platforms and web series offers incredible opportunities for young talent," says Devi, who emphasizes the importance of continuous learning. "I constantly watch projects in Hindi, French, and Korean to stay updated on global trends."
Devi's recent project, 'Vikkatakavi', presented a unique set of challenges. Set in 1940s Telangana, the series demanded meticulous research to authentically portray the era's fashion.
"I immersed myself in research," she explains. "From watching classic Telugu films like 'Maa Bhoomi' to exploring libraries and articles, I sought to understand the nuances of Hyderabad's lifestyle and attire during that period."
This research informed every costume choice, from the hero Naresh Agastya's tailored suits to Megha Akash's elegant yet understated sarees in cotton, linen, and khadi.
"Choosing the right fabrics was crucial," Devi reveals. "We had to balance historical accuracy with visual appeal, ensuring the costumes complemented the characters and narrative."
Devi's experience on 'Vikkatakavi' underscores the meticulous work that goes into creating a believable period drama. It's a testament to her dedication to her craft and her commitment to bringing history to life on screen.
Currently, Devi is working on the web series 'Marmayogi' for Hotstar and the film 'Manasachora', further solidifying her position as a sought-after costume designer in the Telugu film industry.
