Singer Alka Yagnik says viral infection resulted in her hearing loss

Playback singer Alka Yagnik is well-known in Bollywood circles. Music lovers adore her mellifluous voice. Although many Tollywood directors tried their best to rope her in, her choosy approach kept her away from Telugu cinema for the most part of her career.

The National Award-winning singer was recently diagnosed with a rare sensory neural nerve sensory loss due to which she has lost her hearing ability. The cause was a viral flu. "This sudden, major setback has caught me completely unawares. As I attempt to come to terms with it, please keep me in your prayers," she urged her fans, colleagues and well-wishers.

People are advised to be cautious. "Every year, the flu season has certain dominant characteristics, This year, it’s hearing loss. This can be cured if you report it to your ENT specialist within a week, preferably 48 hours. Damage could be permanent if you don’t,” Indian Express has quoted Dr Kalpana Nagpal from New Delhi as saying.

Besides a viral infection, meningitis, mumps and measles can also cause hearing loss, experts say.
