Ramoji Rao, born on 16 November 1936, is no more. The pioneering media entrepreneur, who was also a businessman and a film producer, breathed his last today following illness.
As the head of the Ramoji Group, he efficiently ran the world's largest film production facility (read Ramoji Film City) on the outskirts of Hyderabad. His network of TV channels are spread across the country.
It may be recalled that, in 2016, he was honored with the Padma Vibhushan for his contributions in journalism, literature and education.
For many, Rao was synonymous with Telugu media. He was camera-shy but had a towering presence in the field of journalism. "Ramoji Rao Garu was extremely passionate about India’s development. I am fortunate to have got several opportunities to interact with him and benefit from his wisdom," wrote PM Modi.
Former Vice-President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu, wrote, "As the visionary who conceived and developed Ramoji Film City, as the founder of financial institutions like Margadarsi Chit Funds, as a filmmaker, industrialist and entrepreneur, Shri Ramoji Rao scripted history with his commitment and zeal." BRS leader KT Rama Rao wrote, "Ramoji Garu was a self-made man whose story is inspirational. His life and his journey is a testament of how one can achieve great success despite all odds. He has left an indelible mark in the Telugu media and entertainment world."
