Tollywood was always known for timeless comedy entertainers. In the last 5-7 years, though, there has been a paucity of writers. As a result, comedies are not being churned out in adequate numbers. A 'Jathi Ratnalu' here, a 'DJ Tillu' there are all we are getting.
In a recent interview, Allari Naresh diagnosed the cause. "There was a time when writers used to join forces and bring out comedies. They would be satisfied with being one of the ten writers of a film. They wouldn't even expect credit. Things changed with writers seeking the limelight," the 'Ugram' actor said.
Writers started seeking fame after they realized that they were not getting their due because of the selfishness of directors and the indifference of producers who don't pay them adequately. As a result, many writers turned directors themselves. Due to a lack of craft, they failed at the job. Concomitantly, directors, who are bad at writing, produced lacklustre comedies. It has been a lose-lose situation.
