"Malayalam Cinema Offers Better Theatrical Returns Than Telugu": Producer Bunny Vas at Pallichattambi Press Meet
At a high-profile press event in Hyderabad for the upcoming big-budget spectacle Pallichattambi, renowned producer and distributor Bunny Vas sparked a significant industry discussion. While praising the Tovino Thomas starrer, he offered a candid reality check regarding the financial dynamics of the South Indian film markets.
Directed by Dijo Jose Antony and featuring Kayadu Lohar as the female lead, the film is a collaborative effort between World Wide Films and C Cube Bros. It is slated for a massive pan-India release in five languages on April 10, 2026.
A Bold Comparison: Theatrical Revenue Realities
Bunny Vas, who is overseeing the film’s Telugu distribution, shared a surprising perspective for aspiring filmmakers. He noted that while Telugu cinema is celebrated for its massive scale, the "comfort" and "returns" for producers in the Malayalam industry are currently superior.
"The theatrical revenue for a successful film in Malayalam is actually higher than in Telugu," Bunny Vas stated. "As a senior producer, I advise young creators to be extremely cautious before jumping into Telugu production. The theatrical returns that Malayalam producers enjoy are remarkably high compared to the current scenario in the Telugu states."
Redefining the "Malayalam Style"
Bunny Vas emphasized that Pallichattambi is a departure from the typical "concept-oriented" Malayalam films audiences might expect.
-
Commercial Grandeur: He described the project as a "proper commercial entertainer" that matches the technical richness and scale of a big-ticket Telugu film.
-
Tovino's "Mohanlal" Moment: After witnessing the film in Kochi, Bunny Vas remarked that Tovino’s performance and high-octane action sequences reminded him of the legendary Mohanlal.
-
Rising Star Kayadu Lohar: With a growing fanbase through films like Dragon and Funky, the producer predicted that Pallichattambi would solidify Kayadu as a top-tier star in the Telugu market.
A Global Vision for Telugu Cinema
The producer also touched upon the blurring of language barriers in modern cinema. He highlighted that Telugu cinema has transformed into a "pan-world" entity, necessitating a diverse influx of films from other languages to sustain the distribution and theater ecosystem.
Mega Update for Fans:
Bunny Vas confirmed that on April 8, to mark Allu Arjun’s birthday, the official title and poster for the Icon Star’s much-anticipated collaboration with director Atlee will be unveiled.
