With Kingdom drawing enthusiastic audience reactions and surging box office numbers, director Gowtam Tinnanuri recently opened up about the film’s journey—from pre-release anxieties to the creative choices that shaped this distinctive gangster drama.

Navigating the Final Stretch

Gowtam described the intense final days before release, saying that the team barely slept as they polished the movie’s details up to the last minute. “All the exhaustion faded when I saw the audience’s reaction. Only then could I finally rest,” he shared.

Deciding on ‘Kingdom’ As The Title

He revealed that, much like with his previous film “Jersey,” the initial working title for this project changed throughout development. “We debated several names, including ‘Devara Nayak’ and even ‘Yuddhakanda.’ Since another film had claimed ‘Devara,’ we felt ‘Kingdom’ would appeal to a broad audience,” he said. For Gowtam, the word “Kingdom” means a safe space—a home—where one’s people belong.

The Debate Behind Cutting a Popular Song

Explaining the omission of the fan-favorite song “Hridayam Lopala,” the director acknowledged viewers’ requests to bring it back. "During editing, we realized it disrupted the pacing, so after much discussion with editor Navin Nooli, producer Naga Vamsi, and Vijay Deverakonda, we decided to remove it. We may include it in the film’s OTT release, along with extra scenes, after consulting the producers."

Crafting The Lead Role for Vijay Deverakonda

Gowtam admitted he had the foundation of this story in mind for quite some time but was waiting for the right actor. He shared that his initial concept for Vijay Deverakonda was different, but once they started discussions, this story naturally became the right fit—and Vijay responded with keen enthusiasm.

Transitioning from Pure Emotion to High-Energy Action

While Gowtam is celebrated for emotionally rich films like “Malli Raava” and “Jersey,” he emphasized that emotion remains his Touchstone, no matter the genre. “Even though Kingdom is packed with action, it’s emotion that motivates every conflict. That’s what truly connects with audiences.”

Why Choose a Newcomer for Murugan?

Seeking to make the movie’s “new world” feel authentic, Gowtam wanted a fresh face. At the suggestion of one of his assistant directors, newcomer Venkatesh auditioned and won the part based on his passion and raw talent.

Bringing Satyadev on Board

The character Shiva was always earmarked for Satyadev. The only challenge was matching schedules since Satyadev was in high demand and their production calendar was still forming. “Once everything aligned, he agreed immediately after hearing the script,” said Gowtam.

A Quick Detour Into Music-Based Storytelling

While Kingdom’s production ramped up, Gowtam and Vamsi collaborated on a musical film, Magic, inspired by their shared desire to explore a music-driven narrative—highlighting the strengths of Anirudh’s compositions and Girish Gangadharan’s visual style.

Planning for Kingdom Part 2—and More

Looking to the future, Gowtam confirmed that the core of Kingdom Part 2 is ready, with scripting set to begin soon. He is also planning a web film centering on the characters of Murugan and Sethu for an OTT platform.

Reflecting On Eight Years as a Filmmaker

Reflecting on his career, Gowtam noted that, though he wishes he had made more films, circumstances like the pandemic and the time required to perfect scripts have been major factors. “I’m committed to picking up the pace for my upcoming projects,” he concluded.

Kingdom—backed by Sithara Entertainments, Fortune Four Cinemas, and Srikara Studios, produced by Suryadevara Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya, scored by Anirudh Ravichander—remains a vivid example of how story, emotion, and fresh creative choices can make a film resonate across audiences.
