Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran's "L2E Empuraan," the highly anticipated sequel to "Lucifer," has faced a tumultuous journey since its release, triggering a wave of controversy from religious groups across India. Accusations of inappropriate depictions of real-life events and figures have forced the filmmakers into a significant re-edit.
In response to the widespread objections, the "Empuraan" team voluntarily submitted the film for re-censoring. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has now mandated a staggering 24 cuts, totaling nearly two minutes of screentime. These revisions include the removal of contentious shots, signages, and even a thanks card dedicated to senior Malayalam actor and BJP MP Suresh Gopi. The revised version is set to hit cinemas nationwide within the next two days.
Despite the controversy, "Empuraan," directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal, has achieved blockbuster status, surpassing Rs 200 crore at the global box office. The film, featuring a star-studded cast including Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and others, is produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Subaskaran Allirajah, and Gokulam Gopalan.
This re-censoring highlights the delicate balance between artistic expression and societal sensitivity, particularly in a landscape where religious and political narratives are closely scrutinized. "Empuraan's" journey underscores the power of cinema to ignite passionate debate and the subsequent necessity for filmmakers to navigate these complex terrains.
