Padma Awards 2025: Recognizing India's Finest

On the eve of Republic Day, the Government of India announced the recipients of the Padma Awards for 2025.1 These prestigious awards, among the highest civilian honors in the country, acknowledge exceptional contributions across various disciplines.2

This year, 139 individuals have been honored, including 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awardees.3 The list features remarkable individuals from diverse fields, including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature, education, sports, and civil service.45

Padma Vibhushan:

This highest civilian honor recognizes exceptional and distinguished service. The recipients for 2025 are:

  • Shri Duvvur Nageshwar Reddy (Medicine): For his pioneering contributions to gastroenterology and affordable healthcare in Telangana.6
  • Justice (Retd.) Shri Jagdish Singh Khehar (Public Affairs): Former Chief Justice of India, honored for his contributions to the Indian judicial system.7
  • Smt. Kumudini Rajnikant Lakhia (Art): Celebrated Kathak dancer and choreographer from Gujarat.8
  • Shri Lakshminarayana Subramaniam (Art): Renowned violinist and composer, recognized for his contributions to Indian classical music.
  • Shri M. T. Vasudevan Nair (Posthumous) (Literature & Education): Celebrated Malayalam author and screenwriter.9
  • Shri Osamu Suzuki (Posthumous) (Trade and Industry): Former Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, honored for his contributions to the Indian automobile industry.
  • Smt. Sharda Sinha (Posthumous) (Art): Legendary folk singer from Bihar.10

Padma Bhushan:

This award recognizes distinguished service of a high order. Notable recipients include:

  • Shri A. Surya Prakash (Literature & Education - Journalism): Senior journalist and former chairman of Prasar Bharati.
  • Shri Anant Nag (Art): Veteran actor with a distinguished career in Kannada and Hindi cinema.11
  • Shri Nandamuri Balakrishna (Art): Popular Telugu actor and politician.
  • Shri P R Sreejesh (Sports): Former captain of the Indian national hockey team, honored for his contributions to Indian sports.12
  • Shri Shekhar Kapur (Art): Acclaimed filmmaker known for his works like "Bandit Queen" and "Elizabeth."13
  • Ms. Shobana Chandrakumar (Art): Celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer and actress.14

Padma Shri:

This award recognizes distinguished service in any field. The diverse list of awardees includes:

  • Shri Arijit Singh (Art): One of India's most popular playback singers.15
  • Smt. Arundhati Bhattacharya (Trade and Industry): Former Chairperson of the State Bank of India.16
  • Shri Ashok Laxman Saraf (Art): Veteran Marathi actor known for his comedic roles.17
  • Shri R Ashwin (Sports): Leading Indian cricketer, known for his exceptional spin bowling.18
  • Smt. Neerja Bhatla (Medicine): Gynecologist specializing in cervical cancer detection and prevention.19
  • Shri Hugh and Colleen Gantzer (Posthumous) (Duo) (Literature & Education - Journalism): Renowned travel writers.20
  • Smt. Jaspinder Narula (Art): Popular Punjabi folk and Sufi singer.21
  • Shri K. Damodaran (Others - Culinary): Chef and culinary expert, known for promoting traditional Tamil cuisine.22

The Padma Awards recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation and achieving excellence in their respective fields.23 The awardees will be honored at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in March/April 2025.
