Sumanth, known for his selection of meaningful roles, returns in "Anaganaga," an ETV original movie that premiered today on ETV Win. This family drama delves into the complexities of the modern education system.

Storyline: A Teacher's Battle for True Learning

The film introduces Vyas (Sumanth), a school teacher who challenges traditional teaching methods, advocating for concept-based learning over rote memorization. His wife, Bhagi (Kajal Chowdary), who also serves as the school principal, holds firm to conventional approaches. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Vyas's son, Ram, along with several other students, struggles in their exams. This prompts the school management to consider dismissing Vyas. The film then explores Vyas's determined efforts to help his son and other students excel, not just in grades, but in understanding.

Performance Highlights and Emotional Core

"Anaganaga" effectively critiques the current educational landscape, particularly how many international schools prioritize ranks and grades at the expense of genuine comprehension. Director Sunny Sanjay skillfully weaves this societal issue into a compelling father-son and husband-wife conflict, forming the emotional backbone of the movie.

The father-son dynamic is a standout, with well-executed scenes depicting the son's dilemma between his father's ideals and his mother's strict policies. The portrayal of ego clashes between the husband and wife is also handled with engaging realism. Srinivasa Avasarala delivers a commendable performance as a stern school teacher.

However, it's Sumanth who truly anchors the film. His aptitude for emotional roles shines through as he delivers a deeply felt performance from the very first scene. Moments where he expresses pain over his son’s struggles are particularly poignant. "Anaganaga" reinforces Sumanth's standing as an underrated actor deserving of more substantial roles.

Kajal Chowdary, despite being relatively new, leaves a strong impression as the school principal, convincingly portraying believable drama in her arguments with Sumanth. Young Viharsh is also impressive as the struggling school kid. The sequences illustrating concept-based learning are well-executed, supported by effective production design. The director's use of real-life examples to impart life lessons adds a layer of authenticity.

Areas for Improvement

While the film's presentation sets it apart, the core premise of a dedicated teacher challenging a rigid system feels somewhat familiar, having been explored in various films previously. The pacing of "Anaganaga" can feel uneven, with the narrative taking a bit long to reach its central conflict. Furthermore, the plot leans towards predictability, lacking unexpected twists.

The film could have benefited from a more convincing depiction of Sumanth’s character challenging the school system. His methods and efforts to bring about change could have been explored with greater depth and conviction.

Technical Aspects and Director's Vision

Chandu Ravi's music is soothing, with songs that seamlessly integrate into the narrative, while his background score significantly elevates key emotional moments. Pavan Kumar’s cinematography is impressive, effectively capturing the school environment, middle-class life, and the nuances of concept-based learning. Some scenes, particularly those related to the school in the first half, could be trimmed by about ten minutes to improve pacing. The production design is top-notch, lending a fresh visual appeal to the film.

Director Sunny Sanjay delivers a decent effort. Despite a familiar story, his strength lies in crafting emotional narratives and drawing strong performances from his lead cast. Sumanth leads the film with grace, and the director effectively utilizes his calm screen presence and experience. Had the scenes depicting the struggle against the education system been written with more conviction, the film's overall impact might have been even stronger.

Verdict: A Worthwhile OTT Watch

Overall, "Anaganaga" is a well-crafted social drama imbued with heartfelt emotions. While predictable, the film is elevated by Sumanth’s powerful performance, the moving father-son storyline, and its relatable commentary on the education system. It offers a worthwhile viewing experience on ETV Win.
