A 27-year-old Telugu woman, Nikitha Rao Godishala, has become the centre of a shocking homicide case spanning the United States and India, after she was found brutally murdered in Maryland and the prime suspect, her former partner Arjun Sharma (26), was tracked down and arrested in Tamil Nadu following an international manhunt.

Who was Nikitha Godishala?

  • Nikitha Rao Godishala (27) hailed from Hyderabad and was living in Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland, working as a data and strategy professional in the healthcare-tech space.

  • She had studied pharmacy at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) and later moved to the US for a master’s in Health Information Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

  • Professionally, Nikitha worked with organisations such as Vheda Health and Management Sciences for Health, handling data analysis and health information systems, after earlier experience at KIMS Hospitals in Hyderabad.

How the Case Unfolded: Timeline of Events

  • 31 December (New Year’s Eve): Investigators believe Nikitha was attacked and fatally stabbed sometime after 7 pm at an apartment on Twin Rivers Road in Columbia, Maryland, where her ex-partner Arjun Sharma was staying.

  • 2 January:

    • Arjun Sharma approached Howard County Police and filed a missing-person complaint, claiming he last saw Nikitha on New Year’s Eve at his apartment and that she had not been in contact since.

    • During the initial inquiry, authorities discovered that Sharma had left the United States for India on the very same day he reported her missing, immediately raising serious suspicion about his role.

  • 3 January:

    • Police obtained a search warrant for Sharma’s apartment in Columbia.

    • Inside, they found Nikitha’s body with multiple stab wounds, and the case was reclassified as homicide.

    • A warrant was issued for first- and second-degree murder against Arjun Sharma.

Murder Accused Flees – and is Caught in Tamil Nadu

  • After leaving the US, Arjun Sharma travelled to India, prompting an international manhunt coordinated between Howard County Police, US federal agencies, Interpol, and Indian authorities.

  • Sharma, a 26-year-old Indian citizen originally from India, was eventually tracked down and arrested in Tamil Nadu by Interpol-backed teams acting on inputs shared by US law enforcement.

  • His arrest is being described as a major breakthrough in a case that has drawn widespread attention in both the US and India, particularly among Telugu and NRI communities.

What Investigators and the Family Say

  • Police in Maryland allege that Sharma killed Nikitha shortly after 7 pm on 31 December, then tried to cover his tracks by filing a missing-person report two days later, before fleeing the country.

  • Reports from Indian and US media indicate that there may have been financial disputes and personal tensions between the two, with Nikitha’s family suggesting money-related issues as a possible motive.

  • Nikitha’s father and relatives in Telangana have appealed to both the Central government and the Telangana government to ensure justice, expedite legal proceedings, and facilitate all formalities related to her remains and the case.

  • With Arjun Sharma in custody in Tamil Nadu, the next steps involve coordination between Indian and US authorities regarding extradition or legal proceedings under existing bilateral arrangements and treaties.

  • In Maryland, Sharma faces charges including first-degree and second-degree murder, and the case continues to be investigated as a domestic violence-related homicide by Howard County detectives.

  • For now, the arrest has brought a measure of relief to Nikitha’s family, but they continue to seek swift justice and accountability for her killing.
