YSR Congress Party leader and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed strong criticism over the coalition government's decision to place the burden of crop insurance premiums on farmers. He questioned this move on social media, asking whether farmers should bear the cost of crop insurance premiums. Jagan pointed out that under his administration, the YSRCP government had successfully implemented a free crop insurance scheme for five years without imposing any financial burden on farmers.
He emphasized that during his tenure, the government provided universal coverage for every crop across every acre cultivated, ensuring complete insurance protection for farmers. For any crop losses incurred, compensation was directly credited to farmers' accounts at the start of the next season, standing as a support system for them.
Between 2014 and 2019, Jagan highlighted, around 3.41 million farmers received a total compensation of ₹3,411.20 crore under the previous administration. However, during the YSRCP's five-year term, 5.45 million farmers benefited from ₹7,802.08 crore in insurance compensation directly credited to their accounts. Additionally, the government paid ₹3,022.26 crore in insurance premiums on behalf of the farmers over this period.
