Indian medical graduates gain eligibility to practise in US, Australia, Canada

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has received the recognition of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The Union Health Ministry today stated that the recognition will be valid for 10 years. With this, 706 existing medical colleges become WFME accredited in India. Those that are going to come up in the next 10 years will also receive the accreditation.

What does this mean for Indian medical graduates? How is it going to impact their lives?

"With NMC being WFME accredited all the Indian students become eligible to apply for ECFMG and USMLE. Recognition will enable Indian medical graduates to pursue postgraduate training and practice in other countries that require WFME recognition, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand," the government said in a PIB statement.

The recognition is a boost to medical colleges in India, which have for long been seeking to become a preferred destination for international students. Regulatory bodies and academics will now have to work even more to enhance the standards and credentials of medical education in India. The reputation of our medical schools and professionals will go up in the coming decade if there is a constant endeavour on the part of administrators, policy-makers and academics.
