On Wednesday, Senator Nikil Saval announced on Twitter that the US state of Pennsylvania has officially recognized Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, as an official holiday. In February of this year, Saval and State Senator Greg Rothman introduced legislation to make Diwali a state holiday, as Pennsylvania is home to nearly 200,000 South Asian residents. The Senate voted unanimously in favor of the legislation, which was seen as a major step in recognizing and honoring the state's rich cultural diversity.

In response to the news, Senator Saval expressed his gratitude and appreciation, saying "To all Pennsylvanians who celebrate this festival of light and connection: you are seen, you are welcome, you matter."

Senator Rothman also highlighted the importance of recognizing Diwali as an official holiday, stating that it "upholds and celebrates our Commonwealth's rich cultural diversity." Diwali will be observed on November 12 this year, and the recognition of the holiday as an official state holiday is a significant milestone for the South Asian community in Pennsylvania.
