Tupperware, the kitchenware company founded in 1942 by Earl Tupper, has filed for bankruptcy. Apparently, it has been unable to compete with copycats. "The 78-year-old company became a household name in the 1950s and ‘60s, but its patent only lasted for 20 years," reported Telegraph.
The proliferation of "cheaper, non-branded plastic food containers" in the market proved to be its enemy. "The proliferation of free takeaway boxes in the post-pandemic surge in food deliveries has also been a challenge," Telegraph added.
The news has spawned hot takes and jokes/memes on social media. "Tupperware made such good quality dabbas that a loyal customer never needed to buy another one! Finally it led to bankruptcy of the company," a Netizen wrote. "The problem of selling durable and resilient products is that you do not get repeat customers because those things last for years and years, just like AMC pots," another commented.
"Indian moms are partly responsible for the ruin of Tupperware. They never let their kids forget or lose a single dabba, thereby reducing sales," a social media user from India joked.
