In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, Annapurna Studios has unveiled A&M MoCap Lab, the country’s most advanced Motion Capture facility. This cutting-edge infrastructure is a powerhouse collaboration between Akkineni Nagarjuna’s Annapurna Studios and Shobu Yarlagadda’s (of Baahubali fame) Mihira Visual Labs, with technical expertise provided by Hollywood giant Animatrik Film Design.
The facility was officially inaugurated by visionary director SS Rajamouli, who revealed that key sequences of his upcoming international spectacle Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, have already been successfully filmed here.
Rajamouli: "A Game-Changer for Indian Storytelling"
During the launch, SS Rajamouli emphasized how this technology bridges a massive gap in domestic production.
-
The Evolution: Reflecting on classics like Eega and Baahubali, Rajamouli noted that access to such local facilities would have elevated his previous works even further.
-
Varanasi Insights: The filmmaker shared an exclusive glimpse of the MoCap technology in action, stating that the precision and performance of the A&M Lab match the best facilities he has visited globally. "We no longer need to outsource our imagination," he declared.
A Vision for Global Competition
Akkineni Nagarjuna defined the lab as a tribute to Annapurna Studios’ 50-year legacy of innovation. He noted that Indian filmmakers can now execute high-end sci-fi and mythological epics in Hyderabad without the limitations of geography or high costs. Shobu Yarlagadda added that creating an in-house technology ecosystem is essential for Indian cinema to truly compete on the world stage.
Technical Specifications & Hollywood Standards
CV Rao, CTO of Annapurna Studios, and Brett Ineson, President of Animatrik Film Design (known for Avengers: Endgame), detailed the lab's massive capabilities:
-
The Volume: A modular 60ft x 40ft x 30ft capture area that can be disassembled and moved to any location.
-
Precision Gear: Equipped with Vicon Valkyrie (VK26) cameras for high-fidelity tracking.
-
Real-Time Visualization: Integration with Unreal Engine allows directors to see digital environments and performers interact live on set.
-
Facial Capture: Advanced Stereo HMC (Head-Mounted Camera) units capture sub-millimeter facial expressions, ideal for films and high-end gaming.
The facility also serves as a "pre-visualization" tool, allowing directors to plan camera movements and lens choices in a virtual space before the actual shoot, significantly reducing production costs and errors.
