According to a government agency, the act of sharing passwords for using online streaming services such as Netflix is completely against the law.
The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has stated that such a practice clearly violates copyright law. It is common in many countries, including the UK for people who do not live together to share their streaming platform passwords with other users.
Netflix hasn’t given any indication that it will be pursuing legal action in such cases. However, the IPO has mentioned clearly that password sharing is a criminal as well as civil matter. In India too, it’s a common practice. Users feel that such regulations if enforced will spread like wildfire to other countries and involve other streaming services as well. Such rules will also impact OTT business in countries like India, which has taken off in an astounding way after the pandemic.
